Time for Microformats!

At last! I added some (actually one) Mircoformats to my about page. Helped with these tutorials, I had done it within just five minutes.

Roger said in the hCard tutorial:

The hCard markup has no impact on how the HTML is rendered by a browser.

But the hCard markup has a huge (positive) impact on the ability of web tools to meaningfully process the information in the HTML document.

So also prepare for the next web, use some Microformats…

Happy Clog 17 February

Yesterday I went to the King Arthur Café in Utrecht to meet up with some other geeks interested in Web development. About ten men came to drink some beer and talk about web sites and standards. Most of the people ate something after the meeting, but I had to go home at six. Fortunately no photos were shot, but I can say it was interesting to talk face to face instead of via e-mail and blogs.

Occur security leaks in your site

The day before yesterday Acunetix warned us that 70 percent of all web sites has security leaks. SQL injection is favorite, so what to do about that?

Rick posted a nice PHP function to secure your incoming variables. Unfortunately it is an image, but that doesn’t oppress our happiness, does it?

Eye for detail

Using a simple layout is alway good, even better as a busy web site. More important for designers is how that actually can be done. The last days I read two nice articles about this subject, so here is my post to share them.

With some examples, the CSS Guy explains how Dingbat fonts can be used to put some nice details in your design. However, he didn’t mention where you can get those Dingbat fonts. So try to look at Dafont, but I think you knew that one already. For browsing the downloaded fonts, I always use The Font Thing, a freeware tool to browse, compare and test fonts.

The second article, was a prediction for 2007 by Keith. Not for web sites generally, but only for design. Keith also notices simplicity will be more important this year.

My own company

I just came back from the KvK Groningen, where I have set up my own company :) At last!

Now I can build websites for more money and profit, send my clients invoices and buy VAT free stuff. An own company had just more pros as cons, I think.

Now I have to do some other things… legal stuff and forms to fill in…
