• In the Google Webmaster Central, you can specifiy which version you prefer (www or no www). I think this would have the same effect as the htaccess code, at least in Google.

• This is a problem for a large portion of websites. Google’s tool is certainly a step in the right direction, but the whole problem is a deeper canonicalization problem thats going to be with us for quite a while.

  The whole “www” thing should be removed as its redundant anyway :)

• Indeed! A few days ago, when somebody was watching while I was browsing, that person said ’shouldn’t you type www before it?’…

• The point is that Google sees every subdomain as a different site. The advantage of using different subdomains is that are usually indexed faster, but the drawback is that your PR is split between a few “sites”.

• I didn’t know Google crawls faster when you use subdomains… however, I don’t use them often.

• Thanks for the handy tip Arjan, I’m using it now on my website :) We had a big problem with PR splitting before implementing this fix.
