Time for Microformats!

At last! I added some (actually one) Mircoformats to my about page. Helped with these tutorials, I had done it within just five minutes.

Roger said in the hCard tutorial:

The hCard markup has no impact on how the HTML is rendered by a browser.

But the hCard markup has a huge (positive) impact on the ability of web tools to meaningfully process the information in the HTML document.

So also prepare for the next web, use some Microformats…

The first thing that came to my mind when reading about this Microformats was: “How can usage of presentational markup for semantic goals be considered a good thing when trying to build a semantic web?”

Or did I just missed the idea of the ’semantic web’?

Spans and divs are not presentational markup…

The DIV and SPAN elements, in conjunction with the id and class attributes, offer a generic mechanism for adding structure to documents. These elements define content to be inline (SPAN) or block-level (DIV) but impose no other presentational idioms on the content. Thus, authors may use these elements in conjunction with style sheets, the lang attribute, etc., to tailor HTML to their own needs and tastes.

I was referring to (for example) the attribute and value: ‘class=”street-address”‘. This is presentational markup used for semantic goals. I can see the advantages that Microformats gives us, but abusing presentational code this way, seems just wrong when building a semantic web.

One of the tutorials also gives some examples of using this ‘microformat with other elements than SPAN and DIV (like LI) that have semantic meaning. Your cite from de W3C page is not really an answer to my question/comment, is it?

With my first comment, I assumed the attribute “class=” is only as a selector for presentational markup, but “class=” can be more than that as the spec explains:

The class attribute has several roles in HTML:
As a style sheet selector (when an author wishes to assign style information to a set of elements).For general purpose processing by user agents.

The list I was using with <ul> and <li> tags do not seem to work. I was referring to two cases in de spec for using the class attribute:
* As a style sheet selector (when an author wishes to assign style information to a set of elements).
* For general purpose processing by user agents.

Because the list tags didn’t work, this was not that clear in the comment.
Any change of creating a ‘preview’ option in the commands?

I will look at that problem soon, I might want to use another markup language (Markdown for example).

I find it a lot more meaningfull to use a DL instead of a UL for a hCard, but this is rather a mather of one’s own opinion. All hail the webstandards, at least that’s for sure :-)

Yes, but what you do with CSS is tricky… you could better also display the labels of your contact information, since you coded them in your source.
